Windows Server 2008

So I am currently installing Windows 2008 Server. At the moment the installer looks a lot like vista. Simple, to the point, few questions. I am kind of nervous about this, because I am installing it on dedicated hardware so that I can configured it all myself.

From the Virtaul Hard Drive Image I had downloaded before, I can tell it is completely different from current servers. It has two options on the install, Core and Complete. I tried the core, and that is when I came to the conclusion that I do not know that much about Windows Server, but I want to.

I want to be able to administrate a windows machine like I do a Linux machine, from the console.

I know that seems kind of odd, but Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 have a Telnet option, that means that you can do everything from the command line, just no one ever turns the telnet feature on. I know personally I use Remote Desktop Connection for all my windows administration.

The specs of this server are actually going to be

  • 2.4GHz P4
  • 1GB RAM (512MB PC3200, 512MB PC2700)
  • 60GB OS Drive
  • 200GB Data Drive (got to have space for things)
  • Dual on board gigE network (only using 1 at 100MB)
  • CD-Rom Drive (DVD used for install then removed)
  • on board video

As with all my servers, I believe in doing it headless. This means no monitor, mouse or keyboard. A general BIOS setting will handle this.

Ok it booted, and it looks a lot like windows vista on a classic theme, I will do an edit and post a screen shot once I get remote desktop on the server.

Ok I will complete this post later, right now I am going to try to configure a server.

--EDIT--

Added the screen shot. Odd thing, I do not have any floppy drives hooked to this server.

But i think you get the idea
